Nina walked down the corridor, all her senses on high alert, and peered into Jeremy's room. She could see that he and Erika were chatting amicably and smiled, then knocked gently on the door. "I hope I'm not intruding on what looked like an intimately private conversation," she said, setting a brown paper bag down on the side table, "but I wanted to check in and see if the two of you were alright."
She set down a cardboard tray containing four large styrofoam containers, two of coffee and two of hot tea, along with packets of sugar and powdered creamer. "If anyone asks, Mr. Gilbert, the contraband caffeine did not come from me!" she told Jeremy. "I won't stay, but you all know where I am if you need anything."

Jeremy grinned at Nina and gratefully accepted one of the coffees, lacing it liberally with the sugar and creamer. "You are truly a lifesaver, Giles!" he exclaimed, then took a long drink. "Oh, yeah. That's what I needed." He ignored Erika's snort of laughter.
"Are you okay? You look like you're expecting the hounds of hell to come crashing in through the door behind you. Stay for a bit, you can protect me from the wrath of Jenna." He sighed. Once Jenna had recovered from finding John Gilbert's severed fingers and the remainder of his very dead body on her kitchen floor she was going to remember to be furious with Jeremy over all this. "Did you know that she's back? Katherine?"

Nina paused in the process of taking a sip of her own tea and nodded. "I spoke briefly with Damon last night, he mentioned that she had indeed returned to Mystic Falls." Too briefly, but that had been out of necessity.
"I would stay, but it's not safe for me to be out and about just yet, for me or for a few others in town. That bloody damned device of John Gilbert's knocked my shields out and I can't seem to get them back up. Any vampire in about fifteen yards of me is going to find it impossible to resist taking a nibble, which as you know would result in his or her immediate death. I was leaning out of the second-floor window talking to Damon last night and even that was extremely difficult for him." She sighed. "Now, while I certainly wouldn't mourn Katherine's demise, I'd rather not be the cause of the deaths of any of my friends."
She saluted the three of them with her cup. "You're well enough protected, Jeremy, and you may find that Jenna's relief that you're alive overrides her anger at your actions. If you need me I'll be at home, locked in my lab trying to fix this little problem." She smiled at the three of them, then turned and walked out.
