Nina sat at the ancient, oversize desk in her library and looked helplessly for a moment at the stacks of old books, journals and parchment scrolls covering every available surface. “Okay, Gianna,” she muttered to herself. “The kids all compare you to the Giles of Buffy fame, now it’s time to follow his lead and turn this mess into actual research.”
Good advice, she mused, but where to begin? She was looking at documents that dated back to the middle ages, most of which were definitely way before her time. She had come up against an unwinnable scenario a time or two in her life, but this one was different, and far, far worse. “Chronologically. Maybe.” She put her hand on the box that contained her most recent acquisitions, Elijah’s own journals and personal diaries. A feeling of overwhelming loss washed over her and she closed her eyes, searching for even the tiniest thread of the tapestry of her life that bore his name and confirmed his presence somewhere in the world.

If it were possible for a ghost to sigh, Patrise would have. It was tough watching her go through this, even though it had been centuries since he had 'felt' anything in either the literal or figurative senses of the word. But she was his Gianna, and he could certainly see the toll losing Elijah was taking on her.
"Does talking to yourself help, luv?" he asked, not unsympathetically. The fact that she jumped a little at the sound of his voice spoke volumes about the state of her mind. He had tried over the years but had never successfully managed to sneak up on her, and he hadn’t even been trying this time. Still, he took the glare she bestowed upon him as a good thing, it meant that she was far from giving up.
He took a more or less corporeal form and perched in the chair across the desk from her. He had never particularly approved of Elijah and she knew it, but he had been unable in the first decades after his death to actually appear to her, only to watch over her and hope for the best.

“Patrise…” Nina glared at him, then grinned. “Yes and no, I suppose. I keep going over it and over it in my mind, and…” Now she did sigh. “I would never admit this to anyone but you, but if I had it to do over again I’m not entirely certain I would have done things the same way. Don’t get me wrong, I love Jenna like a sister, and the Gods all know that the Gilbert kids have suffered more loss than any ten people their age should ever have to, but…”
She looked at the papers on her desk again, some of which were actually priceless relics for their age alone. “But would I have saved her, knowing that the price I had to pay would be this high? I don’t honestly know. I feel like part of myself has gone missing, but that doesn’t quite explain it. It’s more like losing your sense of sight, or hearing, than something physical, but that’s not quite it either. I was always aware of him on some level, I knew that no matter where he was in the world I could find him if I needed to, and now that’s gone, and it’s really screwing with my concentration.” She shook her head. “I know there had to have been a good reason that he did what he did, I just can't think what that might be. I guess that’s the first thing I need to find out, really.”

Patrise shook his head slowly. “No, luv. The first thing you have to do is come to the terms with the fact that you did save Jenna Sommers rather than killing Klaus.” He stood up and paced the perimeter of the room, passing through the untidy stacks of her discards that would have tripped up a living being. “You chose to save her life because you believed that Elijah could and would handle his brother, just as he had said he would.”
He waited for a moment before continuing. “Now granted, your Elijah has never been one of my favorite people, but he has always been a man of his word. His personal code is very much like that of the Knights, in that honesty and integrity are of utmost importance to him. For him to renege on the deal he made and turn his back on you, especially on you, isn’t something he would have done lightly.” He waited again, this time until she nodded. “You know him better than anyone else in the world. What could Klaus possibly have tempted Elijah with that would have convinced him to go back on his word and let Klaus live?”

Nina thought about his words for a long time before she answered. "His family," she finally said. "Over the centuries, Klaus has killed every member of their family and refused to tell Elijah what he did with the bodies or even how they were killed. If there was even a chance that any of them were in a state they could be reanimated from, that would be the ace that Klaus needed."
She looked at him, this particular conversation having brought a whole other matter to mind. "Patrise, do you ever regret it? Stuck in this half life, with your immortal soul tied to me?"
