" 'Go look it up' she says. That's great, Erika, where exactly in the public library do you think I'm going to find the 'Killing Werewolves for Dummies' book?" Damon muttered to himself as he approached the library. Two stone lions regarded him from their posts at the top of the stairs, as if wondering who he was and why he was talking to himself.
Not for the first time this week he wondered if he might not be better off to just cut his losses and get the hell out of Mystic Falls, he certainly had enough reasons to. Stefan. Elena. Katherine, and now Mason Lockwood. He sighed and walked up the stairs and into the library. Involving Nina wasn't something he really wanted to do, but if anyone had the answers he needed, or knew where to find them, it was her.
He caught her particularly enticing scent before he actually found her, in the Medieval section apparently deep in conversation with the suit of armor standing sentinel in the corner. He watched her for a moment, locking down the urge to tear her throat open. Her shields still hadn't completely recovered from John Gilbert's device, they were intermittent at best although she was doing everything she could to fix the problem.
"You don't actually expect that thing to answer you, do you?" he said with a wry grin.

Nina smiled and lightly touched the gauntleted hand of the Knight in the corner before she turned to Damon. "Of course he answers me. I'd be damn disappointed if my enchanted Sir Patrise suddenly stopped talking to me," she replied, as if there was nothing out of the ordinary about it. "How do you think I always know when there's kids making out in the dusty old Medieval section of the library?"
From the look of almost pained determination on his face she deduced that her swiss cheese shields were at it again and closed her eyes in concentration for a moment. "Damn John Gilbert to hell and back. I'd like to hunt that bastard down, kill him and bring him back to life so I could kill him again. There. Is that better?"

"Much better," Damon replied. sliding an arm around her and pressing a light kiss to her temple. "So what does your Knight here say about adults making out in the dusty old Medieval section of the library?" he asked, looking warily up at the impressive suit of armor.
Her shields flared and he let her go with a sigh. "Aside from 'go ahead you idiot, take your life into your own hands and bite her, see what happens'?" he added wryly.

Mentally cursing John Goddamn Gilbert again Nina managed a smile for Damon. "You do like to play with fire, that's certainly no secret." she replied. "My Knight is the absolute pinnacle of discretion, luv. He only tattles on the younglings, he would never speak against me. Not that anyone would believe it if the suit of armor in the corner started talking to them, mind you."
She smiled at him and took a step back, feeling her shields falter again. "What brings you into my lair this early in the day? You've been making yourself rather scarce since Founder's Day." Not that he had a choice, she added to herself. They both knew what kind of danger she posed to him. She had also needed to give him time and space to figure out what he really wanted. The way she figured it, she'd waited this long for him, she could wait a little longer.

"More of the usual," he replied without thinking about it. "Making an ass out of myself over Katherine, breaking Jeremy Gilbert's neck and trying to stab a werewolf with a silver knife."
He looked at her sheepishly and to his ultimate surprise she just laughed. "And now she's laughing at me. Which of those are you finding so hilarious?" She was the most unusual woman he had ever known, and he really didn't know that much about her. Certainly not as much as he would have liked to know, but any steps he had made in that direction had come to a crashing halt when her shields had failed in the wake of Johnathan Gilbert's anti-vampire device. The only vampire he knew of that was able to withstand the siren song of her blood was Marco Stannard, and that was only because he had lived with her for seven decades.

Nina stared at him for a moment, then laughed. "Silver doesn't have any effect on them, Damon. That's right up there with garlic and crosses for vampires. You want to kill a werewolf, it's much easier than melting down the family jewels for a bit of pure silver." She smiled at the perturbed expression on his face.
"Unlike your lot, luv, a werewolf is still human, and they're far from immortal. They're also only unnaturally strong during the full moon. Kill the human and you kill the wolf. Rip out its heart or tear its head off and I guarantee you it's not going to get up again."
She rolled her eyes and Sir Patrise chuckled. "Stabbed him with a silver knife."

Damon stared in astonishment at the suit of armor and took a couple of steps away from it. "I thought you were kidding! Did I just hear... did that thing just... laugh?" He stared at Nina.
He thought for a moment about what she had just told him, frowning and shaking his head a little. "Wait, quit sidetracking me. You mean to tell me that it's that easy to kill a werewolf? How come I never heard anything like that? I always thought you needed..." he glanced warily at the armor, not wanting to say anything else that might set it off.
"How the hell... Nina, what exactly is that thing?"

"He's a knight in shining armor, of course, and stop calling him 'it' and 'that thing'." Nina chastized gently. "Damon Salvatore, meet Sir Patrise de Montaigu. Or rather, the spirit of him, since it would be downright morbid of me to actually have carted his body around with me for all these years." She smiled at the look of pure astonishment on Damon's face as the suit of armor politely extended one gauntleted hand. "Patrise, my dear friend Damon Salvatore."
She nodded in satisfaction as Damon shook hands with the Knight, then frowned a little. "You want this information because you intend to kill Mason Lockwood." It was a statement, not a question, and there was a coldness in her voice.

Damon shook hands with the suit of armor, trying not to look as foolish as he felt, then turned back to Nina at the strange tone of her voice. "Of course I'm going to kill him. That was kind of the idea when I stabbed him with the silver knife."
He felt more than saw her anger when her shields flared again, and he took an involuntary step back, more than a little surprised that she seemed so opposed to the idea.
"Why? What does it matter to you? He's a threat, Nina. He knows about us, hell he almost got me killed by telling Liz that I'm a vampire. He's in league with Katherine, he probably has been since before he ever came to Mystic Falls! So yes, I'm going to find a way to catch the bastard, wring the information I want out of him and kill him."

Nina closed her eyes for a second, then glared at him, her hands on her hips. "You and Stefan. I'd like to wring both your necks sometimes! Him with his 'Damon tried to kiss Elena so I have to kill him', and you! What the hell are you trying to do, kill every man who ever slept with your precious Katherine? Because if that's really what this is all about, it's a very long list!" she realized she was close to yelling and took a deep breath, slamming her shields back into place forcefully.
"As far as being a threat, it seems to me that Liz Forbes is more of one, yet I don't see you trying to kill her! Or Caroline for that matter, and it's no secret that she's been carrying tales back to Katherine as well! Leave the Lockwoods alone, they have enough to deal with already between Richard's death and trying to make sure Tyler doesn't kill anyone."
She visibly reined in her temper again. "The biggest problem you have, any of us have for that matter, is Katherine, and neither you nor Stefan has taken the opportunities you've had to take the bitch down!"
