"Outsider," Nina snorted. "That woman really doesn't have a clue, does she? As if this sort of thing only happens here in, well, it's not quite the middle of nowhere but you can certainly see it from the town limits." She shook her head. "As if it's some sort of real-life Sunnydale or something."
She looked a Mason, then back at Patrise. "Alright, she's obviously in the dark, I vote we leave her there for the moment. Let her think she's doing big, helpful things with her secret council while the rest of us actually do something to deal with the problem." She sighed. "We really need to stick together here. Turning the Salvatores over was a phenomenally stupid thing to do."

"Oh that was stupid. Fine for him to coerce some guy into picking a fight with Ty just to see what happens, drop truly obvious and really bad wolf references at a dinner party, and oh yeah, let's not forget the whole stabbing me with a knife thing," Mason said, making Nina jump a little. "If he'd been wrong either way, I'd be dead."
He had been awake ever since she had come back into the room, but he thought he might learn more by eavesdropping. He opened his eyes and looked at her, catching movement out of the corner of his eye but when he looked, the room was empty save for the two of them.
"I didn't start this war, Ms. Giles. I came back here for my family."

"Eavesdroppers, Mr. Lockwood, never hear good things about themselves," Nina quipped, but a gentle smile took the sting out of her words. She watched him lever himself up into a sitting position. "You really should try to just relax for a while."
She reached over and ran gentle fingertips just above the worst of his wounds, which were healing nicely. "But you're right, of course, Damon's actions were absolutely uncalled for. I did ask him to leave you and your family alone. Unfortunately he is a survivalist, and a werewolf is something that they have never come up against before, and in Damon's defense you were working for Katherine."
She sat back and sighed, allowing herself just the tiniest moment of pure feminine appreciation for his truly impressive physique. "How are you feeling?"

He managed to almost sit up, but the complaints from far too many injuries quickly convinced him to do as she suggested. He lay back again with a sigh. "At least you agree that he was out of line. And you yourself said that it was no fault of mine that she was controlling me." That sucked, he mused. Really sucked. Katherine, his Katherine, his reason for living for more than a year. "So, you're sure she can't, you know, take over my mind again?"
Before she could answer, though, he continued. "Can I ask you something? Who exactly are you? I mean, Ty said you were one of his teachers, but that was pretty odd advice I heard you giving him at Richard's wake, and you didn't seem at all surprised when Erika brought me here. Not that I'm not extremely grateful, I am, it's just..." he shook his head.

Nina smiled at him, but centuries of not trusting people meant she wasn't going to give him the answers he was looking for. "I am one of Tyler's teachers, I'm also the school librarian and I own the town library, which isn't exactly the answer you were looking for, but it will have to suffice for now.." Satisfied that the damage was healing, she sat back.
"As to that little bitch compelling you, I'm frankly surprised you hadn't figured that one out for yourself. You knew enough about vervain to hide the moonstone in a well full of it, and somehow managed to lace the cup Damon got at the picnic, but it never occurred to you that it was also a defensive weapon? Someone wearing vervain on their person, or ingesting it on a regular basis, cannot be controlled by a vampire. Although I suppose you didn't know that because she didn't want you to." She shrugged. “Keep it in a pocket, wear it in a pendant, ring or bracelet, or just start putting a little bit of it in whatever you eat or drink every day, and you will be safe from vampire compulsion.”
